Birdseed Project |
The Birdseed Equity Project was undertaken in the Winter of 2024 with aim of fostering family-friendly engagements with nearby green spaces, connections with nature, and helpful relations to the feathered neighbours who share our backyards and parks.
In collaboration with South Vancouver Neighbourhood Houses' FoodHub program and United Way, packets of wild bird seed were distributed to 100+ clients of the local food bank who may otherwise face financial barriers to interacting with urban wildlife. |
Small postcards were affixed to the packets, offering ethical bird feeding tips and low-cost alternatives. The inverse of the cards featured illustrations of four common backyard resident birds of Vancouver and likely-to-be newfound friends following seed dispersal. These were translated to six different languages (English, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, Arabic, Korean), reflecting the primary demographics of the neighbourhood. In-person outreach at food bank distribution days was undertaken throughout the project, promoting informal and fun conversation on birds, ecology, and new hobbies with neighbours. |
